Together Steve and Sue Arkell bring a lifetime of gymnastics experience and knowledge to the competitive programs here at gymnastics plus. Steve and Sue have been successfully coaching together since 1989. Together their unique combination of technical and artistic talents provides a full service competitive gymnastics program, designed to produce successful athletes from level four through to the elite athlete.  Prior to starting his coaching career in 1979; Steve was a competitive club, High School and Collegiate gymnast and spring board diver... He won numerous state and regional championships in both sports.  Sue comes to gymnastics through her extensive background in dance, as a professional dancer, and dance major in college. Sue has worked closely with some of the worlds top choreographers, including her good friends, Geza Pozsar (Nadia Comeniche), and Nancy Roach (Shannon Miller). During their time together Sue and Steve have had the privilege of working and learning from some of the best coaches and athletes in the world. Together they have also received seven optional coach of the year awards and two choreographer awards.

The Arkells have always been active and believe strongly in the USAG Gymnastics Level 4-10 Junior Olympic program. Their USAG athletes have qualified and competed in 16 consecutive Level 10 National Championships; and have won no less than nine Level Ten National Gold medals on all four events and the coveted All-Around, earning the right to train at the USA Olympic Training Center as Junior Olympic National Team Members.

Steve and Sue have also been highly involved with the TOPS National and the USAG National and International Elite programs. They have qualified ten athletes to National TOPS, six to Junior Elite, two to the Junior Elite National Team, and one 2-time International Elite Team Member. Their Elite athletes have represented the U.S.A. internationally against China, Russia, Romania, the Ukraine, Israel, Canada, Australia, Bulgaria, and Mexico. One of their athletes, Ms. Sarah Curtis, now in her senior year at the University of Michigan; won a Gold Medal in 2001 and a Silver Medal in 2002 on Vault at Championships of the USA.

Of all their accomplishments, Steve and Sue are extremely proud of their 24 athletes who have been the recipients of full collegiate athletic scholarships.  These scholarships total well over One Million dollars, to some of the country’s leading Universities.

The Arkell’s long term goal at Gymnastics Plus is to create a full service competitive gymnastics program accessible to all, designed to help each gymnast achieve their personal goals and become the best version of themselves at every level; beginning through Elite.  The cornerstones of their philosophy and program are based on these principles:
